Some Tips of Feeding and Burping Your Baby / Child

Feeding and Burping Your Baby

Is it ok to feed your newborn by breast or bottle? How often have you been stumped by it? Generally, it is recommended that children feel hungry – whenever they feel hungry.

Signs that your baby is hungry: The baby may cry, put his fingers in his mouth, or make sucking noises.

A newborn baby needs to eat every 2 to 3 hours. If you are breastfeeding, allow your baby to nurse for 10-15 minutes on each breast. If you're formula-feeding, your baby should take about 2-3 (60-90 milliliters) at most meals.

Some newborns need to wake up every few hours to make sure they get enough to eat. Call your baby's doctor if your newborn wakes up often or if your baby is not interested in eating or sucking.

If you're formula-feeding, it can be a little trickier when you're breastfeeding if you can easily monitor whether your baby is eating enough.

Another good way to tell if your baby is getting milk is to see if your breasts feel full before your baby feeds and less full after feeding. Talk to your doctor if you have concerns about your child's growth or eating schedule.

Babies often swallow air during feedings, which can make them constipated.

If your baby tends to be gassy, but has gastroesophageal reflux or feels gassy during feedings, try burping your little one after every ounce when bottle-feeding or every 5 minutes when breastfeeding.

Try these burping tips:

# Hold your baby directly on your shoulder or by his head. Pat your baby's head back and forth with your other hand.

Sit your baby on your lap. Put your hand on your baby's chest and put your hand on your baby's chest (be careful not to catch your baby's cold). Gently use the other hand to pattern your baby's pit.

# Place your baby face down on your lap. Support your baby's head, making sure it's higher than his chest, and gently rub his or her back.

If your baby doesn't leak after a few minutes, change baby's position and try burping for a few minutes before feeding again. Always burp your baby during feeding time, then keep him in an upright position for at least 10-15 minutes to avoid vomiting.
